Default Challenger auto shift handle removal

Does anybody know how to remove the automatic shifter handle from an 09 Challenger. I have seen several sites where the directions are given but they are all diffrent. I looked at the chrome bezel below the leather knob and it looks like possibly something should be slid up ward to release a lock or something but my paper clip didn't work. One site say pry of the bezel an another say just twist the whole knob. I don't want to damage any of the original parts just in case I want to put them back on. I found a modern looking handle, Smith and Wesson 44 magnum, looks pretty nice, Autozone for 19 dollars...same handle on e-bay someone selling for 129.

The vehicle is fairly new and may still be under warranty, why not ask your dealer how to do it?

What does the warranty have to do with him wanting to change the shift handle?

Nothing except if he screws it up and breaks something, he eats it.

If he broke the same part out of warranty, he would still have to pay for it. So, again, what does the warranty have to do with replacing the shift handle.

So, how much aftermarket stuff did you install on your truck, while it was still under warranty? Stereo? Side Rails? Bed Liner? and the list goes on.

mopar29mod - If it specifically states that it will work in your vehicle, then it should come with instructions that explain how to remove the factory unit and how to install this one. If it doesn't, then I would question how they can claim that it was designed to fit your vehicle.

Ed, get a grip. My point was (and apparently not clear to everyone) that the dealer MIGHT offer proper instructions and/or may even remove it for free, in that it is a fairly new vehicle and hopefully he will have it serviced there and buy another vehicle down the road. It never hurts to ask and it might avoid breakage as you mentioned above.

For the record, I didn't install a stereo. The side rails were Mopar, purchased at a dealer. The Bed Liner was installed by a company with a warranty covering materials and workmanship. They made good on that by replacing (with Mopar Parts) every screw holding the cleats, since they buggered them up during removal. All the other accessories were Mopar and some were dealer installed.

Chrysler really messed up, when they killed off all of those dealerships. My servicing dealership became KIA and my diesel mechanic went to a FORD dealership. The Chrysler dealership across the street from them wants my business, but I am reluctant, now that I am out of warranty.

I hate to say it, but I may start taking my truck to a FORD dealership, just so I can have a quality mechanic working on it.

I have read recently that some dealers, Chrysler and GM alike, are going to court to see if they can be reinstated.

They can try, but in the end they are wasting their money. They tried when it was first announced and the courts upheld the decision of the manufacturers.

On top of that, even if they win, the quality mechanics have already moved on to other dealerships. It's doubtful that they will come back.
