Help need help to indentify pistons on 440

hello all mopar fans, i recently bough a 440 out of a winevago motorhome and is got casting numbers indicating 12 2 72 and on the upper pad it says j 440 t 1 24 any way, i took the heads off and is got flat top pistons with letter D on the top of each piston and each piston is got 3, 1/4 of an inch deep drilled holes rigt by the edge of the upper top of piston i dont know if this was for balancing purposes or something alse. any one knows what was the application for this pistons and what the drilled holes where made for? . the motor is got 346 heads, 4 bbl carb, and forged steel crank shaft.

Default pistons

The "D" is the piston size. "A" is standard and each letter indicates an increase of .0005" in piston diameter. Are the "holes" on the leading edge of the piston? If they are they indicate the front of the piston. Dan
