Muffler Placement
I saw a street/race car that had the mufflers placed after the rearend, right before the exhaust tips. Any advantage/disadvantage to this?

It might be allow removing them. It might be to get weight behind the axle. Old Fords have the exhaust like that.

yes the further back you put the mufflers, the more mellow the sound you will have, and also the more efficient the muffler will be. The exhaust gases are a lot cooler, (compact) the further back you go, so in essence you can run a smaller muffler than you would have to, if you like hung them right off the headers, I.E. 3.5" header muffler vs. 2.5" muffler behind the axle.... and it will also be much quieter...

Ditto!
Look at a new Mustang, Camaro or Charger/Challenger. The mufflers are all at the back of the car as are most cars these days. |

It's also a matter of available room....

Now that the fuel tanks have to be forward of the rear axle the only space available for newer cars is behind the rear axle, mufflers tend to run colder at the back so corrode more frequently.

They also run them back there because they run cats between the collector and the muff. If there were no cat or expansion device, the exhaust run would be too long before the rear bumper and you would get a raspy muffler. looks rice to me, but whatever works for you. If you dont like the look, you can run them laterally behind the bumper, cross fire like a rear engined car.

Okies,I've just done this,so I'll have my say....
My car was WAY to loud with the 3.5 inch Xpipe system I built with hooker aero chambers,so on my my mates advice(who works in an exhaust shop),welded some 2&1/4 glasspack (we call them "hot dog"over here) into my tailpipes... Quietened it down by half, according to my "better half". |
