I was told that the number 230 on the end of the casting number on a 400 block was th best block to use. I have one and I would like to know what the difference is? Wheather it be the cylinder wall thickness or the main bearing struts or all of the above. This Block had an explosion in it and I just wandered if it was worth my time to have it checked and sleeve if necessary. How far can you bore this block? Bill

230 is a 71-72 400.It's a keeper due to the thick wall casting that gives more to bore. They also have a thicker bearing support area than later blocks. This is the best of the 400's and the perfect stroker buildup block.I would have the machine shop look it over before making any plans.A sonic test of the cylinder wall's will tell how much can be bored but .060 shouldnt be a problem with this block. How bad was the "blow up"?

well the explosion was #3 and # 4 rod came off the crank broken rod bolts. The pistons are all there but the rod caps came off and locked the crank. the rods also grooved the bottom of the cylinders #3 #4 other than that I can't see any other damage,. This motor came out of a demolation car . I am assuming they ran it until it quit.

Yes that 71 block is supost to be the best one it should have a thicker main web section.I would take it apart and send it to a shop and get them to hottank it and check it for cracks. It would be a good block for a high output stroker
