Default 727/904 hybrid transmissions

I remember reading about them but I cannot find the info now. Does anyone here know where I can dig it up w/o having to dig through 14 years of magazines?
I did a search here and didn't find it.

From Web:
Hybrid-electric transmissions
(As of 2007.) General Motors, Chrysler, and BMW developed a two-mode transmission/motor designed for hybrid-electric vehicles which increased the gas mileage of full-sized SUVs by 15% (or 25% including cylinder-cutoff systems). It was an option in the 2008 Dodge Durango as well as big Chevy and Cadillac trucks and Mercedes and BMW cars. GM built all the transmissions for all the partners in a new plant near Baltimore, according to an Autoweek report. It could be programmed for either gas mileage or performance. The system looked like a regular rear-drive transmission, but had two electric motors inside; one was used for low speeds, the other for high speeds. A similar device was being developed for front-drive cars; it required little redesign of the rest of the car, simply replacing the standard automatic (physically, at least). It could be used in four wheel drive vheicles. The automatic-transmission part (which is used for transmitting gas-engine power) appears to be a CVT.

Well I don't know what car craft did, but whatever they did would also be applicable to the Mopar transmissions... a 727 is a 727 and a 904 a 904. They are the same internally doesn't matter if it's Mopar, AMC, or International. The only thing that changes is the bellhousings and torque converter (ring gear being on the TC vs the flexplate). However there are some year to year differences on the transmissions when it comes to pumps, drums, and planeteries...

Cudabob are you serious, or were you just pointing out the fact she used the word "Hybrid"? The question she was asking was about swapping parts back and forth between the two, therefore making a "Hybrid" transmission..

The only 727/904 hybrids that I've heard of involved swapping 904 guts into the 727 case to reduce parasitic losses, the SS/AH guys did it for years. They reportedly also used Ford C-4 components in a 727 case.

That's the info I'm looking for. My reason for mentioning the car craft article was more to eliminate that article because I was looking for the older article.
I want to know how much they can handle as far as hp/tq and vehicle weights.

SMR Transmissions do that kind of stuff - they raced a Dak (low 9's, 150 mph)with their own "hybrid" trans. Check out their website here: http://smrtrans.tripod.com/smrtransm...tro/index.html

There is a "904 with 727 internals" on craigslist So. Ca right now. I thought the 727 had one more clutch and one less band? Eh, what do I know.....

I thought the way the dragracers did it was with a 727 case (stronger than the 904) and 904 guts (lighter rotating parts?).

I didn't think the 727 pump would fit in a 904 housing

As I understand it, the reason for installing 904 guts in a 727 case is that the NHRA rules at one time specified stock cars must retain the original style transmission case but I believe the rules now allow the 904 to be used as is.

The 727 and 904 have th same number of bands (2) but the clutch count varies with the year/model in both.

For Stock Eliminator and Superstock Eliminator

Dave Smith at www.protransracing.com

A long wait but worth it.

The 904 housing tends to fracture at the pump area.
