Driveshaft question
Does a '69 A-Body with a 727 Torqueflite use the same driveshaft as the same car with an A-833 4-speed? I know the yoke might be different (26 spline vs 30 spline?) but is the driveshaft the same length?

I think it would depend on which axel it has due to the pinion nose being differant on 8 1/4,8 3/4, and dana 60s

If they both had the same rear end, 8.75"?

And the universal joint size?
Should be the same length if that's the same. |

yeah, the 904 is shorter so it would have a longer driveshaft. The 7.25 is also different than the 8.75 in pinion length. I think the short shaft 727 out of a van is the same length as a 904 but can be mistaking.

Tape measure time, I think. Can't find anything that documents driveshaft lengths, only overall lengths of 727 and 904 autos. If you are keeping the same rear axle, you just need to find the corresponding measurements of the 727 and A-833, and get a driveshaft made. You might get more info here: http://www.passonperformance.com/ These guys specialise in A-833's.

Were did a 904 get into the equation? OP was looking for difference between an A-833 and a 727. And the lengths of these two would be the same.

Yeah, I read into it too much. As far as 727/833 trans length is concerned, they are the same +- ..125 inches, enough to let the slide yoke take up.
I did a little math and have a few A-body driveshaft lengths to throw in the mix: 108 wheelbase 66 Barracuda w/7.25 rear and 904 stock length 51.75 108 wheelbase 66 Barracuda w/7.25 rear and 833 stock length 51.75 108 wheelbase 66 Barracuda w/7.25 rear and 727 stock length 47.86 108 wheelbase 66 Barracuda w/8.75 rear and 904 stock length 49.50 108 wheelbase 66 Barracuda w/8.75 rear and 833 stock length 49.50 108 wheelbase 66 Barracuda w/8.75 rear and 727 stock length 45.60 difference between 7.25 and 8 3/4 rear is 2.25 inches, the new 8 3/4 driveshaft needs to be shortened 2.25 inches to fit If going to a 727 from a 904, you need to shorten original driveshaft 3.89 inches So if you are looking in the yard for a driveshaft to purchase, you can use these dimensions to get close if no spot on, but always measure if your going to get a custom and remember 3/4" of slip yolk play at closest point, which is same level of output shaft or suspension under slight load. |

According to that chart, for my '69 Dart with a 8.75 rear, the d/s length with a 727 is 47.81", and with a 833 is 51.53". I thought they'd be different... Unless that chart is wrong? Reading some of your replies would lead me to believe it might be!

That sounds like the difference you'd have with a 727 vs a 904...

remember that the wheelbase changed 66-67 from 106 to 108 and then again 111 (all dart except wagon) so take that into account. Take a tape...

pishta - you confuse me. First you agree that the DS would be the same, going from a 727 to an 833, then you post measurements that state the exact opposite.

I think he got his 904 and 727 measurements backwards.
