Default Ford 3rd member Differential

Hey guys, I know a lot of us are running a 9" Ford rear end. I currently have a posi 3.89 gear ratio 9" in my duster and am looking to change out to a 3.55 gear ratio. Does anyone know of someone that has one for sale that is in good shape? I need a gear set to get my RPM's down. Right now with the 3.89's running at 55mph my R's are at 3200 and would like to get them down to at least 2500 when crusing at this speed. Thanx

I know they are still a little pricey, but you have the confidence of new parts. Have you tried looking at any of the FORD boards?

3200 ÷ 3.89 x 3.55 = 2920...

Looks like you'll need taller than a 3.55 to achieve your target. Even a 3.08 gives you over 2500.

Yep, if your tach and speedo are correct you'll need 3.00's to achieve your goal.

Default I like

My 3.23 ratio. Very good performance, and reasonable turns per MPH.

I'm inclined to agree with peg leg... a 3.23 is a very useful compromise...

Gives you about 26 - 2700rpm at that speed.

I have a buddy with a BB mopar with 3.23. gears and he hated them so he went to 3.55. Anyways I have been cruising with these 3.89 gears since 04, just took a little longer to get to my destination, so when I go to 3.55 it will be some what of an improvement not much but better..

I like the 3.23 also, great gear for a street car. I changed to a 3.55, didn't like it and went back to the 3.23... Plus you should be able to find a used center section with a 3.23 for a good price, very common stock gear. Then ya could change back and forth for the driving your going to do...

I know they're pricey but a Gear Vendors overdrive is the way to go, if you can afford it.
