Default 340 camshaft i.d.

hi fella's--long time/no chat. i just removed & disassembled a 340 i have owned for 5 yrs. i'm trying to identify the camshaft, was told it was a purple shaft. the only numbers stamped on it are on the back (distributor) end they are 901284. can't find anything on web, anyone know what i have?? has very choppy idle & doesn't start making power til 2500rpm's.

The numbers stamped on the end of factory cams are probably just the number of the blank, the only way to know the actual grind is to measure with a dial indicator while the cam is in V blocks.

Agree with John. If there is a purple splotch of paint on it, its probably MP and these are quite distinctive when it comes to lobe lift. eg. 284/484 "031" cam will have a .322 lobe lift off the base circle (lobe lift X 1.5 = stated cam lift)

All aftermarket cams have the grind numbers and maybe lobe profiles on the rear of the cam, pull it and post it.
