Noisey Lifter
Hey guys I have a question. Yesterday I went out and started my 340 up and noticed that I have a noisey lifter and I mean Noisey but once the car idled for about 3-5 minutes it quieted down. The last couple times it did the same thing so I am thinking that I may have a weak lifter. I live in North Western Pa so with the cold weather my oil's viscosity is without a doubt pretty thick and could be the problem for the noisey lifter at the initial start. I have not torn the V covers off yet but am planning on doing that this week to see if I have a bad rocker arm pocket for the push rod which is not allowing the lifter to open. So my question is if I have to replace a lifter should I replace all or just the bad one? I was told that I should replace all along with the cam shaft and then I was told I need to check out all the lifters and if they all look good then just replace the bad one... Can you guys give me your opinon? Thanx

How old is the motor? If it's got some miles on it I would try an additive like Rislone X first.
If that doesn't work I would replace only the offending lifter. |

I'd be running 0wt-30 synthetic for rapid oil flow to valve train.
conventional motor oil in cold weather is like molasses. also, I would not do a thing until i pulled the valve cover to make sure there is not a more serious problem. |

I've fixed sticky lifters by adding a quart of ATF, run for about 20 minutes then change the oil.

John K, The engine only has about 12000 miles on it and I change the oil about every 500 miles. I think that I am going to go ahead and pull the covers off to see if anything is happening inside. I know last year I had a rocker failure with the push rod going thru the pushrod pocket of the rocker and then had to remove the intake to find the little piece of the rocker and I did find it. Ok guys thanks for your sugesstions, they are much appreciated.

before you yank an intake, valve train parts can be fished out through the
openings in the head, at least for a 440. My friend was able to retrieve a lifter that burped out once. |

Yes cudabob, I read that on one of the other forums so I thought, if I had too, I would give it a shot. I have a telescopic magnet tool that I think would work fine.

There was a post in this forum a few months back. It's possible to change a lifter but looks a little tricky. I'd try it though. You have nothing to loose.

I had a pretty healthy tick that would come and go in a 318, seemed to be worse in damp weather, never seemed to do it in cold weather.
Changed the lifters, no difference, turned out to be a sticky valve. |

By sticky valve do you mean the valve would momentarily hang up in the valve guide?

Kinda hillbilly fixed it, rope in cyl., took spring off, chucked valve into cordless drill, took out rope and lowered piston, sprayed lots of penetrating oil on stem while rotating and up and downing it, put it back together, no more tick. |

I've heard of "balls to the wall," but never heard of "member to the fender." You might be on to something.

Don't forget to go to the hospital if it lasts more than 4 hours!
