Default 360 carb and manifold on a 318

I have been thinking about doing this swap to get a little more hp and an easier start out of my 318 in my 76 d200.I have had nothing but problems with the little carters which is odd because they are generally a reliable carb.I am also looking doing this because my truck is absolutely nutless . Granted i know it aint a hot rod but i will be pulling a 17ft bass boat and possibly a cab over camper at the same time up hills around here in AZ.I would really like to put the original 440 back into the truck at some time but for now the 318 is gonna have to do.So i guess my question is has anyone here done this swap?Or should i just go over to a 4 bbl setup.I have the 360 carb and manifold already. let me know cause i need to get this truck a running cause trout season is upon us here and i cant pull my boat with my 89 turbo caravan cause it dont have a hitch and i dont want to destroy the tranny in my mini.

I have also looked into just adapting a large holley using the trans dapt 2086 adapter

http://www.jegs.com/i/Trans-Dapt/969/2086/10002/-1

i noticed it says it works for the rochesters but what about the carters?

I'd do it if I had the 4-bbl carb and mfld. You won't get much of a boost -from the 360 2bbl, if any. the small-port 318 heads are the choke poin, but it might be a little more driveable (torquey). Better heads and a bit more cam, carb, and exhaust would be the answer here. As for the Holley swap, why bother - same situation applies. The TQ 4 bbl. is a friendlier street carb anyway - providing one takes the time to set it up correctly.

The whole issue is you don't have much torque. With that said, an Edelbrock vacuum secondary carb will do better, is easy to tune, and will get better gas mileage. Either that or get a Carter AVS for it(pretty much the same unit) and factory 340 intake. You still won't get any torque without a cam, intake, and header swap, but the unit will be better. Besides a Torker 2 intake, carb and cam package, plus the headers will surprise you, and be prety easy to do. Rick.

It costs u intake gaskets to try it. If it was me i'd do it and see how it works. The 360 carb is a little bigger and the ports on the 360 manifold won't match but not a big deal. If the 360 carb don't work well try a rochester 2bbl off a older 350 cheby they usuallyworked welland will bolt on the manifold without mods. you have to adapt the "linkage" to the dodge tho.

I have done this swap 4 times with good results. My next door neighbors 1978 magnum was a slug. first we got rid of the lean burn system which improved the way it ran and mileage actualy got better. then we bolted up the 360 intake and carb, then it became a tire scorcher. if we had put better exhaust on it i'm positive it would of done even better. the last one was on a dirt track car, man did i make that guy a believer in the power of a 318 with 360 intake and carb. the only thing is you won't get the mileage of a 318 with this combo. it does hurt alittle, but the gains are worth it.

I was also perusing at the idea of maybe adapting the 360 carb to the 318 manifold.I did not know but according to my dad there is a rv cam in the 318 and it has a big tube single exahaust already and i hate headers[long story]
