Default Help with 318

I got a 318 that's in my '79 dodge d100 step side. I've only put an 8 3/4 rear end with 2.94 open gears and some cheap walmart spark plugs. I'm wanting some cheap power out of my daily driver. The army only gives me weekends off so my truck can only be down for a day, two at most. If anyone has any ideas, thanks and I'd like to hear them.

Have you turned the air cleaner lid over yet? That's about as cheap as it gets. I would put it back before cold weather though. You may have to dimple the center of the lid slightly with a ball peen. Just don't burn more gas with your throttle foot because it sounds better! Make sure the filter is in good condition too.

The air cleaner lid flipped? I've never heard that. And I have an orange box that I bought, would that help any from the old black box? And the 2 1/2 dual glass packs helps with with sound along with a 2* advance time too.

In my opinion, sounds like your only transportation? AND with a time limit on having it "down?"

Keep your fingers out

Depending on the size of your tires, the 2.94 gears ain't helpin' ya.

You say it's an 8 3/4, you might look for a second pumkin with some lower gears in 'er.

Turning the lid over helps the filter and the carb throat get air from 360 degrees instead of just the little snout in the air cleaner body. It's old tech but it works.
You do have to change your filter more often, but not greatly, and it's right out where you can see it. Just turn the lid back over for foul weather, high waters, that sort of thing. No different than running one of those big round chrome air filters, though the design of the base that goes to the carb can make a difference. If you're running a stock 2 barrel or even a four barrel, it's good for a small gain. Anything more and you need to look at cams, hood scoops or ducting and other modifications.

3.23 gears would probably be a good compromise...

Without knowing what he has for tire size and transmission, this is a wild guess.

For all we know, he might have huge tires and be running an OD four speed

The tires are 295/50/15's on the rear, and it has a 727 trans with a shift kit. And I just bought a $300 Honda that I'll drive time to time so it can be down for a bit. I'm looking for 3.55 gears.

OK, those are SHORT for a pickup. You might actually NOT want to go numerically higher than about 3.23, or your mileage will probably drop like a rock.

Those tires only seem to be about 26 1/2" tall, so a 3.55 gear would give you about 65-66 mph at 3000 RPM, compared with about 73 mph with a 3.23

But it all depends on what you want to do. My A body has a Ford 9" with 3.89 gears, and 26" tires, so it is NOT a "highway cruiser." But is sure is fun on the on ramps.

If you do go with the 3.55's, you might want to consider a limited slip as well. No sense just smoking one of your 295's! As for the engine, start collecting a carb/intake package,(600 cfm/Edelbrock Performer or a copcar iron 4bbl and Thermoquad) headers, late-model '302 heads, and a cam. These are projects that can be done in a weekend (except for the rest of the exhaust system) but you won't get the full effect until the whole thing is together.

I heard that a 360 intake and carb would be good and give like 20hp more

Remember the stock iron 4-barrel intakes were spreadbore style on cop 318's and most all 360's. If you're OK with a Thermoquad, it makes a good (and usually dirt-cheap) combo, but again the cam, exhaust, and heads should be upgraded to take full advantage. 318 heads have smaller ports and the 360 manifold's are a touch bigger. Not a deal-breaker until you're well along the upgrade road. Factory iron 4-bbl. manifolds flow quite well for a stocker. The TQ, while most folks shy away from them, is actually a pretty good street carb and parts and service can be had from David at www.demonsizzler.com. I have one on my factory iron manifold 360. I like it a lot and would not change it, except maybe to put a Weiand spreadbore aluminum manifold under it to save weight.

My truck haves some headers in it no name or anything. But there not stock. And I'll look at swap meets, car show, junk years, etc. For a 360 intake and 4 bbl carb.

If you find one (mine was out of a 78 Ramcharger) be sure to try for the throttle cable and kickdown linkage bracket/bellcrank as well. Your 318 stuff won't fit without modifications because the 4-bbl throttle lever is positioned further outboard than the 2-bbl. Not a dealbreaker, though, the mods are easy enough if you can weld. Or Bouchillon Performance will sell you the necessary bracketry and cables.

I guess you'd better go over ALL the braking system. Haven't heard of your experience happening at all - usually a flex hose might leak, or a threaded connection, but both front lines broke?
