Question

Does anyone know how to change the wiper post seals on a 69' Dart with air conditioning? I know I have to get up under the dash to change the seals but there are tons of ducting up under the dash which is preventing me from getting to the posts. If I do manage to get to the posts, how do I change the seals?

Thanks in advance,
Neo

The only way is to remove the parts you need to access the wiper pivots from below the dash. It's not quite as bad as you think, but then it's not easy either.

One of the Mopar magazines just did an article on a different type of seal that apparently can be installed from outside. It uses umbrella type valve stem seals. Not sure which magazine it was in, but it was within the last month.

That was the May 2000 issue of High Performance MOPAR. Starts on page 47.

I thought that the use of the umbrella-type valve guide seal was a rather unique idea.

Ed,
Can you tell me where to buy these umbrella type wiper post seals? Did they have their number/adress in the magazine?

Thanks,
Neo

Thumbs up

In the article, they used umbrella-type valve guide seals. The seals that they used were Fel-Pro #13955.

If you want factory reproduction units, you can call Shumacher Creative Services (206-364-7151). It is called the windshield wiper pivot seal.

They used the umbrella-type valve guide seals (Fel-Pro #13955), in the magazine article. These appear to be the way to go, especially if there is any wear on the pivots. If you want reproduction seals, you can call Shumacher Creative Services at 206-364-7151 and tell them that you need the windshield wiper pivot seals for your application.

The only way to get to the seal is to remove the pivots from the car (two bolts hold it in).

Once the pivot is out, you will need to remove the old seal and clean the pivot really well (this will prolong its life) and then put a few drops of machine oil into the pivot.

Use a screwdriver blade the seat the seal over the stepped portion of the shaft.

It may be possible to stretch the seal over the hub on the end of the wiper pivot shaft without tearing it, but heating the seal in water at 200 degrees F along with a little silicon spray on the pivot end, makes the installation much easier.

For added protection, you can use a little black silicone sealer at the top of the seal.

Use a thin bead of silicone sealer, to seal the pivots to the firewall, upon installation.

The article has several good pictures, that makes this much easier to understand.

Good luck,
Eddie
