Default 318 Head work price?

Just wondering, here; I am building my 318 and I definitely want to do a little head work. I was thinking maybe a small port/polish job and possibly opening the valves to 1.88/1.60.

The Eddie heads are expensive, and this won’t be a street thumper car, I just want it to breathe better and squeeze out a few more horses. Even cast iron heads from Summit are like $350 a piece for basically what I want done to mine.

My question is: Anyone know the ballpark range of a machine shop doing the head work vs. me just buying heads? I’d like to use the originals if at all possible. The 318 is going into a very big car, not a racer, and I’m in CA. Any thoughts are appreciated!

I'd take another look at what you can buy of the shelf. Its all about cfm flow through the head. A few hundred more bucks could be another 40 hp! And doubtful you will get a consistent job for each cylinder by porting yourself, unless you are an expert.

Hmm, interesting. I was thinking it'd surely be cheaper to have a machine shop do a little work than to buy expensive stuff off the shelf. I worry about the quality, though. I dunno... sigh...

Find a local Stock Eliminator engine builder and have him do a sweet street valve job!

Most newer heads for sale are CNC machined, so ports are all exactly alike, a big plus!. I'm not a small block expert, but
I'm sure there are some newer 340/360 heads that will livin up your engine! Check the net for 318 build/upgrade projects.

I do imagine you are talking about a 318LA and not a poly. You do have options available for an LA but with a poly headwork is the only thing available. No aftermarket/new head is made for a 318A.

My headjob was mega bucks and I got a deal .

Thanks, cudabob496! Yea, it’s the LA engine, ’68, sorry, forgot to mention that. I had completely forgotten about MOPAR Action. Nice!

Rich, those are some real, real nice looking heads.

Ok, most folks arn't doing iron heads, its sort of a specialized area becuase why would you cut on cast iron when aluminum has so many advantages (like being easier to cut). But my rule book says use cast iron, so... I have not explored the cost of a really limited head prep (simple clean-up with a good valve job). but the fully ported (1.94"/1.6") 302 heads on my Dart's 318 (324.5) cost about $1850 with valves, shipping, and a $200 core charge From Shady Dell Speed Shop in PA. I actually call that a pretty good deal considering they are supporting 330 RwHp/300 RwFtLb on pump gas.

I'll add this data here as it applies to iron 273/318 heads mostly:
Here are some flow numbers I've collected over the past ten years:

Cool! I guess I'll give a few local machine shops a call. I'm not looking for race heads, just something to wake things up a tad.

I'll let y'all know what I find out.
