Easy Project - Plug Wires
Get a $13 multimeter from Walmart and check the ohm resistence in your spark plug wires. I think the MSD wires I have are suppose to measure about
10 ohm per foot. Also, before putting the plug wires back on, stick a good amount of silicone dialectric grease in the caps, to keep moisture out, and prevent spark leaks. It also lets you get the caps off easier a few years from now. You may discover a bad wire, which is giving you a weak spark, which could easily lose you 10 or more horsepower. There's Camaro's out there to spank! |

Standard carbon core suppression wires have a limit of 10,000 ohms per foot. Wire cored wires will obviously be less.
And don't put grease on the cap side of the wires, and just a small amount on the plug side. Actually use a brush to spread it evenly around the boot. Too much grease on the plug side and the boots can push off the plug when the grease gets hot and expands, and grease on the cap side can ooze inside the cap. I bought an old sears oscilloscope for checking older ignition systems. Helps find those pesky misfires that are intermittent. |
