Default My alternator

I switched from a stock alternator w regulator to a 100 amp built it regulator. I tucked the field wires away and let the regulator plug hang. Now it has a big drain/short/big spark when I reconnect the neg bat terminal. Any ideas?

Thanks

sounds like the hot wire to the alt is grounding somewhere

Easy to find

Hook a 12V test lamp in series with the ground cable.

Start unhooking stuff. Since you already suspect the alternator, start there

Unhook the main charging wire from the alternator and temporarily tape it off

If that doesn't do it, start removing fuses one at a time

Did this EVER work, or did it start to show the problem immediately?

"New" parts does not necessarily mean "good" parts. The alternator could be defective.

There was no leak til I installed this alternator. It charges good though.
I cant see it being anything else.

Some one-wire alternators have a parasitic draw

Maybe so, but it shouldn't be enough to light a test lamp. Do you have a "feel" for how much it draws? Got an ammeter, you can put in series with the ground leg

I got an unknown drain (.15amps) on my Honda, that will not go away no matter which fuse I pull, so I put a Summit disconnect switch on the negative battery terminal, and open it when car is parked for a long time. Otherwise, battery goes dead in about 3 days. Electric shops want big bucks to find drain.
