727 Trans ?
so i'm going to be putting my 440 back in this coming weekend, and while i'm at it a new torque converter is going in, along with a trans temp gauge. my question is what line do you want the temp gauge to go on? i dont have a bung in the pan so it will be T into a cooler line. do i want it from the trans to the cooler or after the cooler to the trans? also i heard there is a certain way you should have the fluid flow threw a cooler, top down or bottom up? what is a normal temp for a performance trans? i have a fan on the cooler and wonder when to turn it on. thanks much. 84 ram 4x4 440/727

I have one Tee'd into my cooler line right before it gets to the B&M stacked plate cooler. That way I keep an eye on the max temp the tranny is at. I think someone told me about 175. Mine runs about 150 on a hot day. I use synthetic tranny fluid too, which helps your tranny run cooler and last longer, and helps you put more power to rear wheels.
Keep your tranny cooler lines away from exhaust headers. |

my cooler is in the bed of the pickup so the lines are no where near the exhaust. and hence the reason i have the fan,no air flow, i need to know when to have the fan running. also which line from the trans is the flow out, the front or rear of the trans?

Fluid flow is out of the front, in at the rear.
Cooler flow should be bottom to top to push air out. I would put the sensor before the cooler so you know the hottest the fluid gets. |
