Default Carter AFB carb electric choke...

I need to hook up the positive wire on a Carter AFB carb and was wondering if there is a different place to attach it. Instead of going thru the firewall and attaching to the accessory on fuse block, can it be attached to something within the engine compartment? Instructions say do not hook up to coil or alternator... Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Jason

Depends on the car/year. Assuming a '60s Mopar, you can hook it up to the ignition switch side of the ballast resistor. You'll see a full 12 volts here when the ignition switch is in the "run" position.

Hooking to the ballast might just be a bad idea, because many of these girls are suffering from voltage drop problems in the ignition harness, caused by

deteriorating bulkhead connectors

deteriorating ignition switch connectors, and the switch itself

A better plan would be to install a good quality relay under the hood, and SEPARATE the "run" wire coming out of the bulkhead. Use that wire to trigger the relay, and pull the original ignition, the regulator, and the choke power off the relay. You can feed power to the relay from the stud on the starter relay

Also remember that the original ignition switch wiring was UNfused!!!!

I don't think the current draw of the choke heater is sufficient enough to threaten the ignition system, in sixties/seventies systems the blue ignition wire also powers the voltage regulator and, in some cases, the alternator field.

If an alternate power source is used it would be better to power the choke directly from the battery through a normally open oil pressure switch, that way the choke wouldn't be heating unless the engine is actually running.

But if thats the case how does the choke "set" if it wont get power till it is running? Or will it "set" after running, or is it actually elec/mech? Just a thought and a question. Not meaning to be argumentitve...

They set mechanically when you pump the gas pedal before turning the key. Only difference between this type of electric choke and the old type of choke heated by exhaust gasses is the source of the heat that makes the spring expand and open the choke plate.
