Question

I've been thinking about converting to 12 volts in my 48 dodge coronet. I've did a little looking into it and I think I can handle it. But I do have one concern about finding a starter. I've got a 230 flathead with a fluid drive transmition. What all do I need to look for in a starter to work right? Any info would be great.

thanks
steve

Most of the folks I have talked to have used the original starter. I would suggest taking the original starter apart and cleaning and relubeing the inside, but most of those old 6 volt starters seem to be able to handle 12 volts without too much trouble, as long as they have had a good clean up and lube first. I have seen this done, but haven't done it personally, anyone else with more direct information, please jump in.

Why convert to 12v ? If you want faster cranking speed to start easier get one of the split 6/12 volt batteries and relays. Works great and you don't have to mess with everything else.Be aware your wiring harness needs to be in very good condition, no cracks or breaks in the insulation. Moving up to 12 volts actually increases the fire hazard if it is in poor condition. Lastly are you sure the model is a 48 and not a 49 ? Models for 46-48 were called Deluxe or Custom, no Coronet that I know of.

Thanks guys!
You are right p15-d24 it's not a coronet. Thats what the guy was calling it when I bought it. I don't no much about these older Dodges. But I'm learning thanks to you all. But it is a 48 on the title. How can I tell if it's a custom or deluxe? And can I get one of those split 6/12 volt batteries and relays anywhere, like auto zone ? I've never heard of one before. If I use one of those batteries do I still need to change out the bulbs and stuf? I'm sure I'll have to still install a altenater, right? Sorry for all the questions. And thanks a lot guys, for taken the time to help.
