If there was performance to be gained I would, but since there isnt, Ill stick to my dodge dist. I have also never seen anything msd made to be good.

I don't know that I'd say they don't make anything good. I have a 6al that I've had for about 10 years and it's still working just fine.

The only benifit I can see to a distributor would be a more precision cut reluctor and/or pickup. But really that is negated by the tolerance in the crankshaft machining. Or being able to use a cap that has the terminals more spread out like a Ford cap to help combat spark scatter. Which I've never had a problem with.

I'm still running Chrysler distributors.

You make this statement without any justification or reasoning of your statement


What is "too long?"

What happened that made you decide to replace it?

The reason I ask, is that you may have another problem which is the real cause.

A "rotor phasing" (Google it) problem may be causing arcing and tracking in the cap

You may have an internally broken plug or open plug wire which is causing the cap/ rotor to see abnormally high voltage. You do remember Abbie Normal, doncha? LOL

Im using a mopar distributor with a 6AL with my 340. Been working great now for 8 years. Changed engines last year but still using same distributor and ignition.

Last week, took car out. Was starting to miss. Went home, and with temp gun noticed #3 header pipe was 30 degrees coolor than others. Plug was ok, and ohm resistence of plug wire was tested good. Pulled cap, and noticed points in cap had corrosion on them, and rotor electrode was corroded. Replaced cap and rotor, took car out, and runs strong and crisp now.
