big block cam id help?? need answers from big block guru
a few years ago I bought an already built 500 stroker and it was a few years old then, engine still hasn't ever been cranked but I don't know where I put the cam specs for it and shift point info and all that and well all I remember is its a mechanical flat tappet with a .600 lift, and was wondering if someone knows of some mech flat tappet cams from big blocks that had a .600 lift and about what duration and shift points would be and possibly manufacturers I've searched online but no luck yet with any sites I've checked so i'm assuming its an older cam that may be discontinued being most aren't really putting out mechanical flat tappets anymore or maybe i'm looking in the wrong place.
so if any of you big block guys can tell me an idea of what kind of duration, rpm range, possible manufacturers i'd greatly appreciate it thanks |

Without numbers all you'll get is wild ass guesses. You need to pull the cam and get the numbers off of it, and hopefully get the manufacturer also. If you have good heads, I'd guess that's a 6800 - 7000 rpm cam. If you're running a tunnel ram, or alcohol fuel injection maybe 7200 for your shift points.

Dozens of manufacturers have hundreds of grinds that match that description. Without a number or measured specs from the cam you can't know what you've got.

I see 2 choices....
1. Run it as it is..... 2. Pull the cam and send it to a cam MFG. They can make/get you a new cam card.... |

Holy crap! There's no way to answer this question unless you take it out! I'm not sure why you got upset or what you expect from us?
Do some research! Chances are that it's not a custom grind, so, you can go through catalog and pick out all the cams with .600" lift. From there, and judging by the other specs on your motor, you'll be able to eliminate some of the cams on that list. However, I doubt you'll ever be able to narrow it down to just one cam using thus method. So really, spend the weekend pulling it out and send it out to a shop. |

You don't need to send it to a shop, you can get the numbers yourself if you have a dial indicator and stand, and a couple of V-blocks. A little time consuming, but you will get the true cam lift and duration numbers. Then just multiply the gross lift by 1.5 and you'll have the advertised lift numbers.

Lift and duration numbers can be acquired right in the car but it's nearly as much work as pulling the cam.

Grab a degree wheel and dial indicator and measure what you got.
