Question

I'm building a stroker small block and got cam recommendations from two companies. One was a Competition grind 273 279 @ .050, .699 .630 lift respectively. 107 deg lobe separation. Didn't get overlap figures. The other one was a Cam Motion grind 274 278 @ .050, .630 .631 lift respectively. Overlap is 63.2 deg. This motor will have 3.79 stroke and 4.10" bore and 6.123 rod. I'm trying to decide which would be the best shaft to use. I've had lots of success with Competition. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'd go with the higher lift one...it can't hurt (so to speak) but it'll probably help make more HP.

It depends on the heads you are going to use.

the steel mopar heads quit flowing after about 620-640 lift no matter what has been done to them. If you are going to use the steel head combo i'd go with the smaller cam choice and if you are going with a newer (w-2 or alum)head then go with the larger cam.

I'm using the newer W2 heads with a Stage II port job. Surprising to me is the small amount of overlap that the Cam Motion grind has with such a large amount of duration @ .050. I'm inclined to inquire about this. Does anybody have any info on this point? Most high hp cams usually have a large overlap figure. Does this mean that the acceleration ramps are more agressive to achieve this type of duration with such a small amount of overlap? Thanks for the input. Wedgehead
