sorry guys just starting out with this stuff because of the influence of a 383. i have a 9 bolt rear end on a '79 dodge aspen and i am trying to find out where the casting number is to find out if it has a 742 or a 489 casting so i can order a new ring and pinion
gear to hold up to the stress of that 383. thanks agian thanks to all that are helping me with this stuff, with the enigine vin (we measured the bore on the block to make sure it was actually a 383 it was exactly on). and finding a new hood. |

18,if you have a 9 bolt rear, its a 7 1/4" and WILL NOT last.i think you are talking about an 8 3/4" rear, the casting #'s are on the drivers side of the center section

383+71/4"=BOOM! Seriously, look for an 83/4 and save alot of headaches. Dennis

I know of someone who blew one of these with a 1bbl 170 slant six...I've got one in the duster, and an 8 1/4 is going in soon
