This is my first ever race only engine. I have W2 head P5249770 and W2 porting templates P5249598. The very first paragraph in the porting instructions informs me that the templates only work on W2 heads P4529446 and P452994-5. Can someone tell me why?

The new heads have slightly different intake ports. I have earlier set of P4529446 and I did compare them to the new P5249770. It looks like they raised the roof and have wider, thicker intake ports. Also have extra ribs to stiffen up the heads. I'm told the newer heads are better when turning the oval ports into rect-ports.
But even if you had the correct templates I would take the heads to a professional head porter. I tried the templates on a j-head (years ago) and they did not flow well. I couldn't believe how low the numbers were. Don Studley-PCH (PERCISSION CYCLINDER HEADS) did my w-2's and the intakes flowed 292-296". The exhaust were really high but don't have the data in front of me. I'm sure the templates don't match the finished ports now! Don currently holds FOUR N.H.R.A. super stock records in his 1999 360 Dakota (GT/TB-TC-TD and still has SS/TC. He specializes in sm-blk mopar but does all heads. A lot of super stockers and stockers in n.h.r.a. send him there heads. He is usually very busy but I'll give you his PHONE & web site.GOOD LUCK.
