Question

I need some advice on what stall speed I should be running in my Australian Charger.
340 cu/in 0.030 up
KB hyper pistons (11.0:1 comp)
Stock rods with usual work done ARP bolts
MP solid 296 dur 557 lift cam
Trick set of Australian made rollers 1.5 ratio
Edelbrock aluminium heads(6017's) ported, flow great numbers.
ICE Ignition system (programable)
850 Holley DP
Full stud kit
904 low gear set
9inch detroit locker 4.33 gears 31 spline Moser axels.
3200Lbs with driver.

Now I know I should be running a 5000plus converter.I'm hoping to run a mid to low eleven, all going well. But I will be driving it on the street regularly. Any ideas?? Would a 4000 converter be a good compremise for a street/strip car?? Thanks.

A stall speed between 3800 - 4200 should be adequate.I don't see the need for a 5000 stall speed. If you were using W-2 heads and say a 4.88 gear I'd maybe use a 4400 stall speed, but between 3800 and 4200 will wo4rk great. In fact if you think the car will hook up very well,I'd lean toward the 3800.

i dynoed a 340 with 12.5:1, a holley strip dominator,850dp, small headers and that same MP cam. it made about 400lbs of tq @5000-5200rpm, and was pretty numb below 4400rpm, but still decent hp @7000. thats a big cam for a 340. if you find a sharp converter guy have him build a tight 8" unit. look for a MINIMUM of 4600 stall. if the converter is built as a high efficiency type it wont be too bad on the street.
my father has a 13:1 360 with a ported 650dp, 263-271@.050 cam and 5000 stall with 4.56 gears and its barely enough.
just my $.02 worth

I ran a 2900 lb dart with a very close engine set up but with 2.45 first gear and 4.88 rear. I had a Turbo Action 4200 converter and car ran best ET of 11.21.

I think you'll be fine with the 4000, but if your'e going to drive around on the street with a cam that's approx. 255 @ .050" then I think you might have a problem with an 850dp
and only 433 gears. If you put your foot into it off idle leaving a stop light and that 850 opens up, I't might fall flat on it's face due to the large vacuum drop. You might want to consider a 750 vac or a 660dp to keep the intake port velocity up for street driving.

I like that cam. My opinion, 4800-5200 and live with it. That gear will hinder you on the strip.
