I want to put a rack in my 68 valiant race car. I know you can swap knuckles and mount the rack on or in the K-member. However, I've heard horror stories about toe change when the front end moves up on launch causing crashes. Is anyone out there an expert on this? Help would be appreciated!

You need to find a rack that has the pivots for the tie rods at as close to the same distance apart as the lower control arm pivots. Then, it needs to be mounted with the rack pivots at the same height as the lower control arm pivots and in as straight a line as possible between the two steering arms. The tie rod arm also need to stay as parallel as possible to the lower control arm as possible through the suspension travel. If you do this, you should have very little bump steer. Most of the people that have problems have the rack improperly installed or are using the wrong width rack.

What rack is best to use? Are the only choices either mustangII or pinto widths? Which is the one to use? Are you saying the correct width of the rack at the ends needs to be as close to the width between the lower control arm mounting points? I am looking to run low 11's, high 10's. I wonder how much weight this will take off?

The pivot points are inside the bellows at the ends of the rack body. On an A body, the pinto rack is probably the closest, but I have never measured to be sure.

Weight wise, over a power steering box, you will probably be knocking off around 40 lbs. But, over a manual box, maybe 15-20 lbs.

Cool

The big thing about putting in a rack is that you will be allowing yourself to have more room for the engine in the engien compartment and for headers.
