Question

I have been thinking about putting mufflers on drag truck. wanted to know if anyone is running mufflers and if they hurt performance. Also I will have to run some type of tailpipe to get exhaust out from under truck. I run 499cu.in. w/enderle injection on alky.

This is almost impossible to answer without covering all of the other influences, as you could posibly see either a gain or loss in performance. I use the rewarder brand in both cars, and have not had to make any changes in tune up or seen any affect on performance. I'm not trying to say these are the ones, however I have had good results with them, they are easy to install, dont cost a paycheck to purchase, dont create ground clearance issues, light weight (compared) and pass the NHRA decibl test on reasonably big motors.

--But I still HATE mufflers!--

What we run probably won't work for you, but for others it might. They are Shoenfeld (long version) short mufflers for circle track. They are 3-1/2" diameter mufflers that fit right on the collector and are about 4-1/2" OD and 10" long. They make just enough difference in the sound to take out the sharpness and crackle. We welded them right to the collector in place of an extension. We bracket race and don't really worry about the last .05 second. We have never ran without them.

On '70 Challenger 440 - 6Pack, 4Spd...Ran with and without mufflers for testing... I noticed a huge difference...Car ran .5 faster with open headers...I was shocked so I tested again and again...it was consistent. The biggest advantage for me was I couldn't hear my car when racing w/mufflers (At the Strip). The guy next to me was so loud with open headers! I like to hear how my engine is running out and also it helps when manually shifting a 4spd...
Run flowmasters on dual exhaust with cut-outs for headers after collectors.

Had a SB that was tuned in a dyno with open headers. Installed 3" Dynomax Truck Super Turbos and without any tuning changes run 12.45/111 mph. Then removed the exhuast pipes and run 12.36/112 mph. The difference in this case was only under 0.10 seconds; 4 passes were made with the mufflers and 11 without them. Most, if not all of the performance difference came from reduced weight.

Sublime 440.Your exhaust system must be very restrictive. Can you give more details? .5 difference in the quarter is very significant!I had a similar experience several years ago.I had a 2 1/2 in. non-mandrel bent system on,1-7/8 Hookers, with Super Turbos ending in chrome retangular stock Dodge tips. The restriction required to enter the tips was less than 2 in.!The car ran a best of 12:90 in cool weather. The following spring I went to a mandrel bent 3 in. system with 3 in. Dynomax bullet mufflers and no tips. The car ran 12:36 with no other changes!!With another motor in later the car ran mid-low 11's with this system and picked up less than .1 with open headers.

Ram..what kind of muffs were those, I have seen tests of Straightlines and others that lost no HP at all.
Oops, I just noticed those were desktop dyno numbers, don't know what parameters they use.

One more week, and we will take our '451' to the same dyno we had the SB in. The dyno operator requested that we would use mufflers in the dyno since we are going to use them at the track too. Years ago we performed a dynotest in the same dynocomparing different mufflers and no mufflers in a 400 hp BB. I still have the results somewhere if someone is interested, there were at least flowasters, supertrapps, daytona turbos, Super Turbos and some local mufflers tested, but I remember that the difference between the worse and best was under 20 hp.

Question

Ram,Not to be a wise guy but those figures really don't mean too much without information such as header tube and collector size, exhaust pipe diameter and muffler manufacturer and type(race?)
