i have a 76 440 from a new yorker , i was wondering what kind of heads it would have and if it would produce any amount of power the way it was?

A '76 440 should have 452 castings on it. They are basically the same as any other big block casting newer than 1968. Biggest problem which the late model 440 had in making power was the low compression. You'll really want to change pistons to get the compression up to a decent level, then it should be a fine motor.

I've seen dyno tests on the cast crank up over 500 hp so I wouldn't worry about that. 1/4 mile times are so dependent on getting so many things right that I wouldn't waste your time by guessing. A low compression 440 motor could run in the 10's if you have the tuning skills of a NHRA stock class guy, or it will run in the 16's if you're a typical mouth breather that hangs out at my local track! A good cam will wake that motor up, but be very careful when using aftermarket cams in low compression motors. It is very easy to ruin what power you do have by sticking too big of a cam in there. My suggestion would be to get the motor swapped in and running first. Then go get the thing dyno tuned. Have the compression checked, do a leak down test, run the car on a dyno and check the AF ratio at all speeds, etc. Once you do all of that then you'll be ready for making some mods. Hopping the thing up before you even know what you have is a good way to spend a lot of money and get nowhere.
