I am considering building a 440, but I'm told that certain year models are thin wall castings aren't good for building for horse power. Ive checked my books and can't find a year for the casting number on the block can any one help? The number is 4006630-440-9. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

The year of the block is cast on the pad next to the distributor. It should say something like "B 440" where the letter is the year and the number is the cubic inch. The year patter n starts at A=1965 B=1966 C=1967 and so on. The stamp on my 383 is B 383 that means it is a 1966 383. As for which years are thin wall I don't know for sure but I would guess that starting in 72 or 73 they would be thin wall. I would think anything before 71 and you should be ok. I'll do some checking in my books and let you know of any changes.
Good luck, Nick |

1976-1978 blocks were the thinwall castings, but this was phased in over the three years.I've built several '77-'78 440's that had enough meat to go + .040 over, but that was the limit.Mopar has said not to go over +.020 on these blocks, but it really depends on how much core shift the block has. That part number indicates a late model block, but I don't know what year you have.
