I'v got a 98 Ram 1500 with a 46re 4 speed auto transmission. I want to change the transmission fluid, filter and gasket on it. Does any one know the proper proceedure for adjusting the bands and where this adjustment is made? Thanks.

i belive you have the 46rh transmission this transmission is a more updated version of the 727 torqueflite. i have the service manual for the 1995 ram which is my truck. i will quote the front and rear adjustment. this should be the same on your 98. front band adjustment; front kickdown band adjusting screw is located on the left side of the tranny case above the manual valve and throttle valve levers. 1 rase vehicle 2 loosen front kickdown band adjusting screw locknut. 3 back locknut off 3-5 turns. be sure adjusting screw turns freely in case. apply lubricant to screw threads if necessary. 4 use a 0-100 inch lb touque wrench to set adjusting screw. a5/16 in.12point socket. or crowfoot wrench will be required to turn adjusting screw. 5 tighten band adjusting screw to 72inch lbs torque. then back off adjusting screw as follows: 2-1/4 turns on 42RH; 2-7/8 turns on 46RH; 1-7/8 turns on the 47RH. 6 hold adjusting screw in position and tighten locknut to 30 ft lbs torque. 7 lower vehicle.
rear band adjustment 1 raise vehicle. 2 remove tranny oil pan and drain fuild. 3 loosen band adjusting screw locknut 5-6 turns. be sure screw turns freely in lever. 4 use an 0-100 in lb torque wrench to tighten adjusting screw. 5 tighten adjusting screw to 72 in lbs torque. then back off band adjusting screw as follows: 4 turns on 42RH; 2 turns on 46RH; 3 turns on 47RH. 6 hold adjusting screw in place and tighten locknut to 25 foot lbs torque. 7 put on new gasket on pan. tighten bolts to 13 ft lbs torque. 8 lower vehicle and refill tranny with ATF plus fluid.
hope that helps.
i installed a deeper tranny pan fron
mag-hytec.com this pan adds 1.5 qts more fluid. always try to keep the heat down
good luck

DALT
The transmission in your 98 ram is
as you stated. 46RE the 4 is four speeds
the 6 is the load rating ( 7 being the highest) R is rear wheel drive and E is electronic control. The H (hydraulic control)
trans was used in 95 and prior rams.
Band adjustment procedure is the same though.

It's important to use the correct fluid also.Use the Mopar 7176 fluid(also made by Quaker State)This is important for the clutches.
