I have a '99 Ram 1500 Quad Cab, 2WD 5.9L A/T with the limited slip read end, factory tow package. 12K miles.
After a coming to a complete stop, I hear a clunk after releasing the brake pedal. I've had the truck back to the dealer several times. They have replaced the rear shoes, lubed the backing plates, etc. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm not sure it's related to the brakes. |

I am not sure what it might be but I have an idea. A family member of mine has a chevy that clunks sometimes after coming to a stop. It almost feels like someone bumps you with there car or something. We narrowed it down to the abs re adjusting itself. Now I have no idea if this would be the same for Ram's but you never know.

You may not have a problem. Vehicles that use slip joints at the transmission or transfer case output sometimes produce this clunk. It is caused by the driveshaft slip joint binding as the vehicle comes to a stop.
When the brakes are applied, the front of the vehicle dives slightly. This lengthens the driveshaft, the slip joint binds at the tranny output when the vehicle settles back, and the bind is released suddenly as vehicle stops or begins to move again. The clunk caused by slip joint bind is harmless, but annoying. Dave |
