Cruzin around on this and other web sites, I've noticed a number of posts regarding pinging in the 5.9.

Living in CA, the fuel get "re-formulated" in the fall/winter to keep the air pollution gestapo happy. In doing this, many cars and trucks adopt a "ping" under a number of conditions.

As for me, yes, I to HAD the ping. For me, it was when the truck was up to operating temp (195F 'stat), going uphill, around 40 mph when the truck shifts into OD (I know, its suppose to shift at 45, another problem, another fix).

But I developed a ping under WOT at around 3000-3500 rpm that would last for about 2 seconds then go away.

I'm a dedicated Chevron user (87 octane) and decided to put a bottle of Techroline in the tank and fill up. I did this about a month ago. After the "treatment" all the pings are gone, the one at 40 mph in OD and the WOT one too!

Been through about 3 tanks since and still no re-occurance.....could it be this simple?!

I know others have had intake gasket problems, and, O2 sensor problems and this fix would not do anything for the intake (no duh!) but might help the O2 sensor.

Just for your info.....98 RC SWB 360 w/Auto 4.10s, R/T package, Gen II, 3" Flowmaster, 13K miles.

Mickey, I noticed that you have that Generation II filter. Speed shop says $259.00 I recall that you like the system.
I was going to go for it myself. Do you actually FEEL the increase in acceleration?
Also, did you notice a mpg increase with that mod alone? Thanks, Cy

To answer your question, it's kinda a "yes"..let me explain.

I did the mods on my truck in a specific order as advised by Dick Landy Industries...

1). 3" Flowmaster exhaust...this added great sound, performance increase in the mid to high rpm range, didn't really change the low end. Mpg went up immiediatley by an average of 2.5 mpg (city+hwy).

2). Gen II Intake...this added a noticeable increase in low end performance. It's louder than stock w/K&N filter element. Sounds great though, has that "roots" type whoosh sound (hard to explain). This also added mpg increases of about 2 mpg (city+hwy).

3). R/T Kit...well this just gave the beast a big kick in the pants throughout the ranges and did give another 1 mpg to the fuel economy.

So to answer your question....I don't know. But I have been told that changing the intake without the exhaust is a waste, but changing the exhaust without the intake will benefit, but leaves more potential performance and economy benefits if an intake is added.....

Don't forget to reset the 'puter.

BTW...paid $210 for mine at RV Performance (look in Truckin' magazine for their ad and phone number).

I HAVE A 5.9 WITH MANY UPGRADES. I ONLY PUT IN PREMIUM FROM A REPUTABLE STATION. I NEVER HAD ANY PINGS EXCEPT FOR ONCE WHEN MY WIFE PUT IN CONTAMINATED FUEL. BUT THAT WAS A QUICK FIX WITH OCTANE BOOST. I ALSO USE TECHRON AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
AS FAR AS THE K&N GENERATION 2 AIRBOX MOD. IT WORKS GREAT AND YOU CAN DEFINATLEY NOTICE A CHANGE IN PEFORMANCE. ALONG WITH A PERFORMANCE MODULE FROM JET!!
