I have a 99 Ram 4x4 QC 5.2L with about 2200 miles on it and have a constant whistle noise when in drive going about 10-20 MPH. I have taken it to the dealer and they have no clue and told me to live with it. I don't know where else to go with this. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Question

Have you done any mods since you bought your truck ?

Changed the antenna ? added running boards ? brush guard ?

How is the fit around the doors ?

Hmmmm, well I get a whistling noise from my truck, but from as far as I can tell and from what the dealer can tell it is my K&N filter.
In specific the FIPK kit that I installed on it. It seems that the whistling comes from all the extra air that is sucked into my TBI. Most of the whistling noise comes when it is cold and under light driving, specially around 20 to 35mph. Under full throttle is makes this nifty swoush noise.

Have you installed a K&N filter, or am I just stupid and thinking the wrong kind of whistling noise?

My 95' 5.9 has a whistling noise, it happens around 20 MPH on up. I starting noticing it right after I installed a 180 thermostat. Think it must have something to do with the the A/C compressor or alternator since both of these must be removed to change the thermostat.

I know the noise Toe is refering to. My 95' makes that noise too but it's because I've installed the K & N Gen II air intake system. It's not a whistle sound, it's more like Toe described.

Yah, it is more of a hissing then a whistle. Still rather annoying though. Crusing up and down the road, it sounds more like a nasty Supercharger, which isn't all bad.

Guess I just gotta stomp on the pedal everywhere I go to get the whooshing noise, not the hissing noise.

do you have the air cleaner mounted correctly?? i put a k&n on my 95 right after i got my ram home in 3-95. i do not have any whistling. when i had my 180 thermostat installed the shop did not have to re-move the items that the "book" said if you have a whistle check to make sure the belt is tracking correctly.
good luck

I believe the whistle noise you describe is
actually a high pitch squeel originating
from the dust seal on the front axle housing
This seal was not used until 1999
It is pressed onto the axle shaft and spins
in the outer portion of the axle housing.
It has no means of lubrication and after a
few miles emits a very anoying whistle like
sound.Try spraying the outer portion of the
seal with penatrating oil, this seems to work
short term. This is very common with 99 rams.
Good luck.

Question

I've got a wistle too. It happens whenever I hit 50. If the A/C or fan is pulling air from the outside, it stops, but if I am recirculating, or if the air is off, I get the wistle. Is it possible that the duct from the outside does not seal when it closes?

There is a TSB that covers the extruder seal noise on the new 4x4 Rams. Basically it calls for cutting the outer edge to rid of the noise. Mopar Mofun!!
