I have a 96 ram with a 5.2 and auto trans. I have noticed lately that the trans emits a buzzing noise when it is shifted into reverse . Mostly when the truck is cold and has been sitting for a day or two. Anyone have any idea`s what could be making the noise? The fix? thanks for any advice.

ALL CHRYSLERS SEEM TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM... my 96 dakota had this and it was the front pump but most of the time the noises come from the valve body have the dealer check it out if its under warranty and show them yourself cause if you dont they wont believe you... DAN

Its the regulator valve in the valve body.
although it doesnt seem to cause any durability problems it is annoying.
There is a T.S.B that addresses this concern
and involves replacing the aluminum valve
with a steel one ( just like they used to be)
I've seen mixed results with this repair
Mostly positive..

Exactly as RamMan stated. I had a 96 that did the same thing. It is common. Check Dodge ram tech for the TSB#

If your truck is under warrenty, take it in to be fixed - If not, I wouldn't spend the money. I've done several of the TSB "fix" for this & most quiet down (It changes the pitch of the vibration due to heavier valve) But is NOT a durability problem - Just my .02 cents!

I have a extended warranty on the truck but it has a $50.00 deductible. I think I will live with the noise since it doesn`t seem to be a durability problem. Thanks

the first start of the day you should put the truck in neutral as this reroutes the fliud thru abigger orfice in the valvebody and fills the converter quicker this works great on older mopars too!

All the late model o/d rear wheel drive transmissions DO NOT flow fluid thru the convertor or cooler in PARK - They DO in any other gear. If you have some conv. drain back, running it in neutral a few seconds will make it go. Mopar had a TSB in 93 or 4 to add a check valve in the cooler line to stop the drain back. It works very good - BE VERY CAREFUL TO INSTALL IT PROPERLY or bye bye trans! Also that's why it's IMPORTANT to check your fluid level running in neutral to get an accurate fill level. Hope you find this helpful.
