Question

Ok - I'll toss out another question. How do you estimate your horsepower ? Besides taking it to the dyno . . .

I mean if you start with what they say is the stock HP for your motor, then add performance parts - like more free flowing mufflers and air cleaner.

Do you have one of those "Desktop Horsepower" calculators or some other software that will allow you to start with a MOPAR stock block and give you estimate power gains as you add performance parts to your engine / tranny ???

Someone emailed me with a question on their estimated HP gains with "staight through duals /w thrush mufflers. . . . and a K&N Air filter . . . The exhaust is 2&1/2
stainless /w 3" pipes out the back."

What do you think the HP gains would be ? I guesstimated up to 20 HP for the exhaust and 8-10 for the air filter, but I honestly don't know.

Little help here . . .

"Good Luck on your project."

I just had my 5.9L dyno'd. The stock
5.9L dynos at 160HP (that means it
is losing about 35% through the
drive-train) based on the manufacturers
claim of 245 HP (at flywheel). My
5.9L dyno'd at 230HP with the same
35% loss through drive-train, that means
I am putting out about 320HP at the
flywheel. My main performance mods so far
have been: Edelbrock stainless steel
headers (15hp), Magnum performance
throttle body (20hp), Dynomax dual
exhaust (15hp), KN Generation II cold
air induction (20hp), Mopar high
performance engine controller (25hp)and March underdrive pulleys (10hp). Please
remember that most performance mods are not
cumulative, just because you add three
things worth 50hp does not mean you
will necessarily gain 50hp, you will have
some overlap. Go to customtruckshowcase.com
and check out the current feature truck
which just happens to be my 1998 Ram SS/T
Good Luck with all your future plans for
your Ram, George
