My engin maint. light came on in my 86 ramcharger year before last. I'm tired of waiting for it to burn out. Why did it come on and how do you make it go out?

My guess is that if you haven't had any engine problems come up, I would look for a short, grounded wire or sending unit.Try unhooking sending unit wires one at a time and checking to see if light goes out on each instance. If thats not it,it gets a little more complicated, you will need a test light and possibly a multi-meter for checking volts/olms.

look behind your glove box and you will see either a black or yellow plastic looking box about 1inch by 3 inch inside the box is a 9volt battery take it out and put a new one in also there is a hole in the box real small take a ball point pen and push down real eassy on the little button make sure you have it hook up and the new battery in it before you reset it

The engine mait light is turned on when it hits a certain mileage (usually about 50-60000 mi) There's a timer module under the dash near the steering column that has a battery in it - Your supposed to change the batt & push the reset switch to turn out the light & do the "required mait" If the connector just happens to fall off, the light wont work!
