Alright here's my problem! First off i have good oil pressure! I have NON adjustable rail-type rockers! I forgot to soak the lifters in oil before installing them!-well when i started the engine all the lifters where tapping, i figured because the lifters wern't pumped up!-well i ran the engine for like 5min it quited it down a little some still tap!-amy advice, i think i should pull the lifters again and oil soak them

Dart_340_Swinger,
So... what is your oil pressure ? I'm talking about a number. Just having oil pressure according to the factory gauge means little. Not to mention if it is the orginal gauge it could be inaccurate. There are no problems with the lifters or the rockers. I am almost certain you have an oiling problem. Once again.. soaking them is positively, absolutely, totally, useless --- and that's my final answer !! ART |

I,ve had this problem before. Only on a 340 though. The lifters will pump up after a couple minutes and be fine. My 340 would have the lifters pump down after sitting for a couple weeks. I never soak the lifters before istalling them and have had no problems. The big blocks fire up and the noise is gone right away. As long as you have good oil pressure I wouldn't worry. You need a proper gauge. A good rule of thumb is
10 lbs per 1000 rpm. I like to have 20 at idle and 75-80 while at the top end.A stock pump will be less.15 at idle 55-60 top end. If they make noise after you have been driving for a while I would worry. I wiped a cam once from lack of oil pressure at high rpm. You are suppose to run the motor between 2000-2500 rpm for 20-25 minutes to break in the cam. The lifters should be quiet after that. I usually take the car for a drive to break them in. What make are they? I've only used Mopar. I have heard soaking the lifters is bad because they have to pump down when you first start it and valves might not close. I hope I helped a little. I had a similiar noise with my 69' 340 in my Duster. Had standard stamped steel rockers that were worn. Replaced them with the MP heavy duty stamped ones and the problem went away. Have you looked at the fulcrum point and pocket where the pushrod sits for wear?

Last year, when I put a used 268 Purple Shaft in my 360, it took about 10 minutes for the noise to go away. running it at 2000-3000 rpm for cam break-in. Had new lifters on it.

Dart, My old 72 charger with 318 would make a loud lifter noise if you started it up and shut it off before it warmed up. The next time I would start it it would clatter for 10 min at least. One thing I was told once don't know if it is true, if you don't put the rail on the head it was originally installed on you could have a oil problem. Like I said some one else told me it wasn't true. Have you watched the rockers with it running? Are they all getting oil? If not maybe a spun cam bearing? Good Luck. If you were near Alex. VA I would take a look at it for you. Larry

I also have a 340 with Engle/Hughes cam and crane lifters running 273 adjustable rockerarms with the proper pushrods. I did not pump up lifters before install and they clattered for a minute or two. I did the proper break-in procedure and back at idle I could here one or two barely clattering so I adjusted them and adjusted them and adjusted them. Now that I am positively sure I have them correctly adjusted I feel the noise is coming from a side to side motion of the rockers. I have great oil pressure checked with a gauge, all rockers are oiling good, observed running with valve covers off.
So I feel its the side to side motion, maybe the rockers or spacers are worn. |

Y'know this is very familiar to me. We did a ball hone on a 360 and used another set of 360 heads from another motor to finish it off. We had HUGE ticks! We replaced the rockers, shafts, and the pushrods and although it reduced the tick a bit each time it still rattled. We finally decided to add .080" lash caps to the valves because even with all these other new parts we still had play on the rockers when the cam was on the base circle. In a hydraulic lifter motor there should never be loose play on the rocker.
Added the lash caps and the noise went away. To this day we still call lash caps "Tick-be-Gones" Hope this helps. I talked to a machine shop that I know and they were NOT surprised. Apparantly the there is much to be desired when it comes to consistancy on a Chrysler engine machining line. The engineering is all there but(and this pains me to say it) the execution is quite often less than stellar. |
