96 5.2l engine. Bought used, but has run great for 18 mos. Recently, it started stalling when not on pedal. It will start right up, but then stall immediately unless you give it gas. Engine sounds ok and may eventually run proper and then start stalling again without any pattern. Haynes book suggested fuel filter. After much checking with parts stores and then the DC Dealership, they now say the fuel filter is in gas tank (if true does that mean you don't ever service it? - info?). I had a mechanic look at the Van, he adjusted the timing and upped the idle to spec. It has only stalled once since and idle seem high when going into gear. Does it sound like the problem is fixed? If so, does that mean the timing has been wrong over 18 mos. and seemingly ran ok? Also, what about the fuel filter? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Sounds like the idle air control (IAC) motor is bad & the throttle body needs cleaned around the throttle plates. There is NO adjustment for the idle or timing - Don't know what he "adjusted" but may have done more harm than good if the dist was moved or the throttle stop was moved. The fuel filter is 100,000mi service item.
