My truck has done this to me three or four times now, all within the last month.

I get in, turn the key and nothing(there is a clunk like the starter relay engaging or the bendix gear inserting). The battery has a good charge, all accesories are working in the "ON" position. I run the automatic gear selector down and back up to Park and still nothing.

If I leave the key in the "START" position for 3 or 4 seconds, she cranks and starts without a problem.

I shut down the engine and it starts fine.

Check the small wire for the solenoid at the starter for a tight connection. Sounds like you may need a starter. You didn't mention what year it is, but if it's the nippo type and it's coming out of your pocket it may be worth taking the solenoid apart and replaceing the round contact. You may (if it's a newer ram) want to switch the starter relay with another in the power distribution center under the hood. good luck!

It's a '96 Ram with the 360.

I did notice a post from 340king, in the performance area under mini-starter. He mentions that when they begin to fail, it is generally a simple fix of the contacts near the solenoid.

I may go ahead and pull it out this weekend and see if that is where the problem is.

It's just kind of screwy, because it is a very intermittent problem. Normally when a starter or a contact begin to fail, the problem will continue to get worse.

I'm hoping for a loose wire somewhere.
