I recall seeing an earlier post that said the factory cats for recent models (I have a '99 5.2 4X4) are high flow, so that switching to an aftermarket performance cat would be a waste of money. Is that right? If not, is putting headers on while keeping the stock cat a waste?

Magnaflow and Catco are just 2 of several companies that make hi flow cats. And from what I can tell - they are worth what ever they cost. Seems to me if you are swapping in headers, and have the cash, might as well do the cat and the exhaust . . . .

You are correct about the high flow cats. The stock unit is fairly high flow, but nothing beats a good Random Technology cat. Trust me, I have one on my truck now! Much better power and sound! I don't know about the Magnaflow or Catco converters. I do know I couldn't find a website for Catco, so that alone kinda steers me away from them. The Random Tech cat is very expensive ($285) but well worth it!
I highly recommend installing headers with a new cat. You'll enjoy the final result! Good Luck |
