I was wondering if anyone knew what year it was that the government required trucks/suvs to be equipped with cats. i know it was later than cars, and 1977 i think is what i've heard...

It depends on the GVW rating of the truck. If it is 8600lbs or more it wasn't required until the early 80's. Under 8600 was the late 70's but not sure of year.

Well I am going to say starting in 79 becuase the 440s were still avaliable in Rams in 78 and they did not require cats on em...

In '78, you had to have above a 6500 GVW to not have convertors. They changed it for '79 and increased the GVW to 8500. This is why the '78 Lil Reds didn't have convertors and the '79's did. They are rated at 6505 GVW. Neat trick by Chrysler huh?
