Question

I OWN A 96 RAM 1500 4x4 WITH THE 318, MY TRUCK CURRENTLY HAS 75000 MILES ON IT AND I AM EXPERIENCING A SHUDDERING BETWEEN THE SPEEDS OF 50 - 60 MPH WHEN THE OVER DRIVE IS ENGAGED, AND THE RPM's ARE AROUND 1300. WHEN THE OVER DRIVE IS DISENGAGED THE PINGING STOPS, I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS HEARD OF ANY TSB's CONCERNING THIS PROBLEM OR HAS FOUND ANY SOLUTIONS. MY LOCAL DODGE DEALER SAID THAT THERE ARE TO MANY POSSIBLITIES TO SPECULATE ON AND RECOMMENDS A TUNE-UP TO START.

THE SOME MODS THAT I HAVE DONE ARE BFG. 285/75/R16 AND A FLOWMASTER DUAL EXHUAST SYS.

My '98 318/5-speed does this! Do you get a loud knocking sound (like someone's beating your motor with a hammer). I've only got a little over 20,000 on mine. I've tried a bunch of spark plugs with wires and distributor cap so I don't think it's a tune up problem. I curently running Champion Truck plugs. If you find out what is causing this let me know.

i'm not sure i understand exactly what sort of noise you're hearing, since you describe a shudder first and then say ping, but if it's a shudder from the drivetrain area only when in overdrive, i'd suspect maybe the torque converter. if it's a pinging from the engine, most likely it's that classic spark knock problem a whole lot of us are having (including me) with seemingly no solution...
