What your problem is the front clutch piston seal is leaking due to a rough sealing surface in the front drum which wore the seal prematurely. What will have to be done is the trans removed & the drum replaced. I would recomend that the entire trans be resealed & any worn/burnt parts replaced Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it was a problem in 96 & 97. Good luck!

you have a leaking front clutch seal. the seal surface inside the drum is machined to rough. big problem in 96-97. replace drum and seals might as well freshin the trans up while it`s out.

I believe the Diesel/v-10 front drum will still fit in the 96-97. I have one in my 95. Fits more clutches which can never hurt. Maybe your trans man can scrounge one up for you. just an idea.

If you are interested. I am having the dealership do mine. They call it a minor overhaul. The dollar amount is $1,750. I love my ram to death, but this has me thinging of trading for Ford or Chevy.

My Ram had the same problem. Everybody told me the front clutch was bad and needed a rebuild.

On a whim, I poured half a can of brake fluid in. 100 miles later, I had my proper shifting tranny back. That was 2500 miles ago, no probs since. Don't know how long my temp fix will last, but it worked for me.

Brake fluid tends to cause seals to expand.

Hey Mike, how's your truck since the new gears & posi have been put in? Is it quicker? Is the "seat of your pants" much better?! lol Are your tires holding it now?
