Have you swapped gears in the rear ?
Mine came with the 3.55 ratio - what all is involved in a swap to say a larger gear (not as big as 4.56, but more than 3.91) What brands are good ? What is the approximate cost involved ? ------------------ "Good Luck on your project." |

Since we are on the subject, could someone tell me what gears I might have or somewhere on the web I could find out? I have a 95 1500, 5.2, 4X4, automatic. I can cruise at 75mph at about 2000rpm's so they are probably a pretty low ratio. Any help would be great!! Thanks!

BLUE: I think there should be a sticker under your hood (or around your fan shroud) that should say - I bet it is the 3:55 (like mine).
I have contemplated swapping gears for a while and still studying up on the whole thing. I may wind up watching / helping my mechanic buddy do it - and the next time I want it done, I'll have a better idea what all is involved. Thanks for all the tips- I'm sure we have a 9 1/4 rear, but I'll follow the Richmond gear lead as I bet they make parts for us as well. I'll have to save some more, cause I think I'd like to swap to a posi kinda rear while I'm back there. But, thats a different post ------------------ "Good Luck on your project." |

Wouldn't suggest going higher than 4.10s. I swapped my stock 3.55 for Richmond 3.91's 2yrs. ago. Came to about $300 installed. 4.10 were difficult to locate in the time frame I had in mind so I settled for the better it turns out(in my case). If you plan on changing your tires(profile/height) that will also affect your final ratio. I run 28" as opposed to the stock 30" height at the track. Gives me about 4.16 final. 4.10s where substantialy more at the time. Probably around $550 installed but if you have a buddy should knock $100 off. I'm shooting for 12s as a perf. goal. I figure I'll need a final of about 3.88 to stop from shifting into od at the end of the track as I close in on that goal. I'll end up back at 30" or 30.5" tires when I get there to lower the gearing to that mark. FYI 8.75 Dak/Dur. 9.25 rear in the 1500's Blair@wot |

Excellent information - THANKS - I remember talking to someone about how tire size will effect the final outcome - thanks for reminding me about that as well.
Things happen to the brain when you get older and enough Candian Mist has been poured over it . . . . . it hate when that happens . . . . . . . . . ------------------ "Good Luck on your project." |

The new Ram "Off Road" with the 17" wheels is available with 4.10 gears from the factory. Have not found out if there would be any probs with putting this gear in an older 9 1/4, I don't imagine there would be though.

You can usually find out what gears you have by looking at the differentials, (hogshead, pumpkins, or whatever you call them around your parts).
Attached to one of the bolts that hold the cover on the diff is a little metal tag. For example on mine, one tag states a long part # and then 4.10 Another tag states USF Limited Slip Diff. I think Dodge puts out 3.55 or 3.54, 3.92 and 4.10 so it should be one of those. Check it out! |

RM Indy brings up a good point about cost.
Once you get to a certain size, the carrier has to be changed as well. This is probably why 4.10s cost extra. I think the cutoff from 3.55 is 3.92 before a change is needed. However I could be off on that. FYI |

I have not looked into what it takes to install the 4.10 into the 9 1/4. I have a 95 4x4 with 3.55 and would love to make the change, but with my luck they will require a different carrier. Guess I should wake up and just order a diesel, but wow! what a payment!!

For dodge everything up to and not including 3.92 will need a new carrier in the front. The 9.25 rear has a carrier that will accept 3.55 up to 4.56, and maybe others. Its somewhat universal.
I just had 4.56 gears put in and it cost me around $1000. Sounds like you are all getting better prices. I would reccomend having someone who has experience with that type of install do it. It can be costly if its not done right, and its not easy. Mine took four days to get perfect. I changed the gears to compensate for 35 inch tires and was under the impression that my gas mileage would get a little better or the same, but it actually got worse. Beware! |
