I am about to purchase a 1983 D-150 pickup. It has a slant six w/165,000 mi.and a four speed (NP435? I think) and the body is in decent shape for its age and the price is right $600. I know that the /6 is a good and reliable engine, but what about the NP435 trans.? Where can I locate a 2bdl intake for this truck? It has a few things that need to be repaired. One being the heater switch that only operates on low. The other is that as soon as the ignition is turned on the parking and instrument cluster lights turn on. It might be the result of a badly botched radio inst. Some body put a shaft style radio in the 1&1/2 Din opening and they
chopped up the dash to get it to fit and the dam thing dosen't even work (power turns on no sound). How hard is it to fix the light problem? I am not sure about the cause broken wires somewhere maybe? I had some thing similar to this happen on a 89 ramcharger but it was fixed at the dealership for free.Does anyone remember the fix for this problem? Thanks in advance. 1989 Ramcharger 1980 D-150 1983 D-150? |

I owned an '84 Chevette that had the same dash light problem. Whenever the fuse for the instrument cluster blew, all the lights came on (maybe they did this to get your attention that something was wrong). The reason the fuse kept blowing was I had a bad wire on the connector to the cluster that kept shorting out on me untill I found the culpret. Check the fuse, it may be that simple.

The 2 barrel intake should be found on Aspens and Volare's that have the "Super" slant six, which I think was standard after 1977 or so. I think JC Whitney carries a four barrel intake.
For the lights, first disconnect the radio entirely, because my guess is that the 12V+ power wire to the radio, which is on when the ignition is on, has been connected to the illumination power wire (the one that lights up the radio dial at night), which is connected to all of the dash lights, but should only get power from the light switch. Seems the power is coming from the wrong end of the circuit, so I would start there. Good luck with it. Brendan |

The /6 is a good motor. I had a cordoba that had a /6 with over 220K miles and was beat on and never taken care of all its life. Brendan was right. The "super" sixes where around in the late 70's and you should be able to find a setup. Though i wouldnt go with the 4BBL setup on a stock /6. If the motor is in real good shape and doesnt really have any blow-by then I would call up CompCams and check out the 2 or 3 cam's that they offer for the /6. My friend slipped one in his 77 /6 2BBL aspen it it gave the thing alot more life.
