How do you go about checking the ballast resistor with a multitester?

This is just a stabbed, but it may get some others to reply.

I think that you can check it for continuity and that's it. From what I understand the resistor is either bad or good - basically an all or none thing.

You check it with an Ohm meter it should have I believe 1 ohm for the single ballast resistor. For the dual ballast resistor one should be 1 ohm and one should be .1 ohm. I think Will have to check in the engine book.
As long as you have continuity though it will work just may burn out the coil and or ignition faster.

Christian

I checked the ballast resistor that comes with the MP electronic distributor kit. It says 1.25 ohm 10%, and mine measured 1.2
This is the single resistor type.

I know its in one of the books around here, I just can;t put my finger on it. But I believe you are correct ChristianCuda 1.o and .1 on a dual and 1.25 for a single. My experiance is they either have continuity or they are broken. I've always been able to see where mine broke. Good Luck. Larry

On the dual ballast resistor the auxillary side is 5 ohms and the compensating side is .5 ohms.Another thing I like to check is the back side of it.They can get cracks on the back and if water or oil gets back there it can short it out.My truck did this on rainy days, took forever to figure that one out.The 68 dodge service manual lists the single ballast resistor at .5 to .6 ohms at 70-80 degrees.
