Question

Does anyone know if there is room under the hood of a '73 Barracuda, ralley hood, for a 440 with the 4 barrel M1 intake (P4529463)? Any air cleaner recommendations?

Thanks,

Thumbs up

Well, how tall is Your M1 compared to Edelbrock RPM?

I mean I´ve got ´70 Challenger, 440, performance hood, RPM intake and with stock two-snorkel air cleaner it fits JUST. You know, we´re talking millimeters here, but anyway ;-)

Hope that hel

If you are describing the power bulge hood it will fit. My brother has a spacer on his 71 fish. Use a drop base air cleaner for more room. Now do any of you big block A-body guys know if a 440 with an M1 will fit under a stock 71 Duster hood? (Schumacher mounted) I am hoping for the ultimate sleeper look!
Thanks,

I have a 69 dart gts with a 440, I run a single plane M1 with a Holley 750 Double pumper, I use a chrome Moroso drop base air cleaner, the hood insulation keeps the lid polished. LOL!!!

Good remarks so far.
To clarify which hood I have, see this link to a car with the same hood:
http://www.li.net/~sfporter/bms/pics.../72cuda_fr.jpg

For comparison, the M1 single plane I want to use (P4529463) measures 5" in front, 6" in back. To get this measurement, I put a yard stick on the carb mounting pad, front to back, and measured up from the valley pan rails (front and back).

From my under the hood measurements (approx) I think there will be 1.25 inches above the top of the carb vent tubes. (no hood insulation)

Any more thoughts? Thanks.

Yea, I've run into the hood clearance thing too. Even with my low deck 383/Performer RPM combo, I couldn't squeeze the stock assembly under my '60 DeSoto hood. So I switched over to the K&N 1 1/4" drop base model. Like DART/MAN said, the Moroso will work fine too. By measuring the actual drop of each, I found that the K&N gives about 1/8" more clearance than the Moroso. That's odd because the Moroso is listed as a 1/2" drop base model while the K&N was listed in the Jeg's catalog as a 1 1/4" drop. Not quite... Either way, I've got a 4" K&N element sittin in there now with about 3/4" clearance from the top of the air cleaner to the hood. So if you're really after all the space you can get, go with the K&N. You can even get a 2 1/4" element for it if things really get tight. Only thing is I don't know if a 14" x 2 1/4" air cleaner can flow enough to supply a big 440? Even a K&N that size might be choking it. Go with a 3" or 4" if you can fit it. Just remember to leave some room for the engine to torque up! You don't wanna bend your hood or nice new air cleaner!

Good luck.

Big Jim,
YES you can put an M1 under the bulge hood here are the choices.
1) 2" carb spacer, with the drop base & you can use a stock lid or for better flow, the K&N lid. rubs slightly, you can remove the hood brace that it interferes with but I just use a regular nut & sinch it down a little to make room.
I also have the air horn milled off, I think that might interfere with the short K&N Piece with the spacer.
2) Ditch the spacer & there is pleanty of room.
E me direct if any more questions
