What are the specs on your 498 engine?
The reason I ask is I am putting a 508
motor together and it will be in a 3400lb
car. I am using a 4.25 welded crank, will there be room for the 1/2" oil pickup or will I have to go with an external one?
Dave at huges has a 508 he sells and he says that there is just enough room for the 1/2"..
thanks again if you answer

Hi Nick, My 498 is one that is widely available from many Mopar shops. I had mine reworked at Muscle Motors a few years ago. There was no prob with the 1/2" oil pick up with my 4.15 stroke, but you will have to take your engine builder/suppliers recommendation on your 4.25. If it does fit I imagine that it will be close. My engine is 11.6 to 1 and is going on five years old. I have ported Stage VI heads and run an Ultradyn .640 cam, M-1 intake and out of the box Holley 850 carb. I built the trans with a Turbo Action kit and run a JW 10" convertor with a 3400 stall speed and manual valve body. Out back is a 8 3/4 with 4.56 gears and I run 29x10.5 slicks. I shift at 5800 and run 11 teens at 2100ft elevation and have run 10.90 at 1300ft. This is in a 3700 lb all steel car. 60ft at 1.48 to 1.52 Wish I had enough truck to make the pull to Palmdale, I would like to run there sometime. Lots of nasty desert between you and me. feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. I'm no pro, but I'll help if I can.

I thought it was 10.91? You're welcome either way.

Only on rainy days and Sundays. Good thing the return lane requires a left turn.

I still won't claim being a drag racer, but the Duster is a riot to drive. I can't wait to try out the trans brake and new engine mods. I hope to see it run 11.45 or so. Not bad for a claimer motor.

You travel through snow 20 plus hours to get to a track and your not a drag racer? Come on! Look forward to hearing the results of the Duster, I know my dad is excited. I saw in Dragster that they are resurfacing Thunder Valley and re-doing the starting pad. Should help in the 60ft department. What would one of your good motors do in that car? compared it on the computer?

I have not compared the better engines to the claimer. The next 340 with W-2's should crank out around 620 hp. That should put the Duster into the 10's pretty deep. The 360 in there now is rated around 475 hp on the computer. By seat of the pants and on track comparison, it pulled as hard as the W-2'd 360 that made 500 hp on the dyno.

I just hooked Fred up to the phone service tonight with the computer. Now he has to find an ISP. Look to see him on here in the next week.

As for driving in the snow it was February. I would have walked almost anywhere to smell burning rubber and spent VP fuel vapors.

Hey J-body! I'm thinking of using the .640 Ultradyne in my Indy 470 motor. A couple of friends at the track run the old reliable .654 Mopar mushroom cam and swear by it. I think the .640, being a newer design, should beat it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Do you run a J body? I have an 80 diplomat 2dr. coupe that runs 12.20's with a 69 440 that is way too stock!

Hi Mikey, To tell you the truth this engine is the second combo on the same big block. It started out as a cast piston Mopar cammed (.557 mech if I remember correctly) 68 closed chamber self ported iron heads. I talked with Muscle Motors and ended up following there recommendations and the Ultradyne cam was one of them. I also had a couple of friend running Ultradyne cams. One a 69 Road Runner that was running mid tens. So I pretty much followed the leader on that one. One thing I have not changed that I would like to try one day is to go to a larger carb. Yes I do run a J-body, a 1980 Mirada. I find it to be nose heavy, poor front suspension travel, but it's way different and it is always a challenge to make something work on it.

No Hip, he lives in South Dakota. I made it down to the Shootout, but spent all day Sat chasing down a harness. Bought one at Lopers in the am and got to the track before I realized they sold me the wrong thing!! Hope to make it back for rain out day.

It would not suprise me in the least to learn you got a wrong part for a Mopar from Lopers. Which store are you dealing with? When I have no choices left I wind up at the Country Club store in Mesa, which means I visit Lopers about once a year. Mention Mopar in there and all they can do is look in a book and quote. Guess its not nice to scare Chevy freaks in the workplace .
