Has anyone used the 509 cam with stock flat top pistons with out notching pistons? The mopar engine book says 286 duration is the limit, the 509 is 292. If this combo can be used what is the limit on milling the heads? My 440 is a 69. Thanks all. motorhead440

I would go with what the book says. My brother put the 509 in a 69 383hp it bent pushrods, broke rocker arms and smashed a piston. It was too big. I think the 440 would be the same. Iknow the 484 works real good.

I ran the mopar .509 cam with stock flat top(trw#2266) pistons no trouble. My friend ran same pistons with an isky 305/.525 cam and no problems. Unless your heads have been milled down i dont think its a problem. I also used the 077 hemi springs with that camshaft. Dont try to get by with weak springs.

The TRW L2266F flattop pistons have a compression height (pin to top) of 1.991, so they end up 0.089 below the deck at TDC (with a 440). That leaves room for 0.509 lift without valve reliefs, but I haven't checked how much. That compression height also leads to low compression. TRW says 9.3 with 78cc heads. With 86cc heads and 0.039 head gasket you get more like 8.8:1.
The stock 440 Mopar flat top pistons have various compression heights: > >'67= 1.991 > >'68-'69= 2.031 > >'70-'71= 1.991 (same as '67) > >'70-'71 SixPak= 2.061 > >'72 and later= 1.926 So valve clearance will depend on what you have. Now a 383 piston is a whole new story, but I don't have the details. ------------------ 440 Jim E-Body Fish [This message has been edited by 440 Jim (edited March 19, 2000).] |

The reason for the 383's failure is that the 69 engine has positive deck height,if I remember right, close to +.022 that's why everything hit.I'm using the 296/557 in a 440 with cast stock pistons and I have plenty of clearance,so you should too with the 509.My heads are cut-.030.
