Gromski, I think that your timing is retarded and the fuel is burning to late (in the exhaust) or your carb jetting is too lean. Just my experiences. AJ

These guys are right about timing and maybe too lean, but after reading your other posts
it looks like it might be a vacuum leak. A vacuum leak would make it very lean. And it would not idle, make it hard to start. Some
holleys have alot of little ports under the bowls.

Its too lean!! My car did this after playing with the carb one weekend at track didn't notice until it got dark when unloading. Thankfully I only made one run and got a hole in a slick. That hole may have saved that motor.

Gromski, I have no way of knowing if your running lean or not but headers will turn red even with carb jetted correctly. On a dyno even cast iron manifolds will turn cherry red under a hard pull.

Needs fuel Gromski! You can turn them cherry at high idle by leaning out the idle adjustments, however at 2500 rpm you are definately into the primary circuit for fuel. I'd be looking for a vacuum leak, get it to start and run at low speed idle, richen up your idle adjustments and get a vacuum gauge on it to start.

My vote is for timing. With a correctly jetted carb and new engine, I had the headers glowing within 2 minutes of start up while connecting the timing light. Once timed correctly, the glow went away. The best way to get them glowing is to run rich and retard the timing, try it!
