Anybody ever built a 383 Stroker motor? Please help me out with finding correct parts and any other helpful hints you might have. Anybody know a good speed shop in Orange County, CA and a good fab shop? Looking to start racing in the next year or two. Any suggestions for pistons, rods, and cams are welcome. Please help me! Thanks in advance.

most shops/parts are useing the 400 which is the same block, different bore, i guess every thing else is the same as most of it interchanges. Iguess they figure if your going to stoke it you might as well start with the most inches. Most of the Mopar engine shops have stroker kits for the 400 and would be able to tell you if they recommend it for the 383

I've had very good luck with Bob Small's Machine shop in San Clemente. Very organized, clean, does very good work. I found him after sending a 340 to a shop that was featured in Hot Rod mag (should have known there'd be trouble). Suffice to say that I had to buy a new crank and have EVERYTHING redone. Bob really did a great job. Probably want to give him a call to see if he can help you. Also, he has a very quick turn around time. Good luck!
By the way, I'd probably stroke a 400 as well. Blocks are cheap. Semper Fi |

I have a 383 stroker motor, what do you need to know other than put a 440 crank and rods in it and buy a set of Ross pistons to use and get a good machinest,it will rev as fast as a 340 and run reaaaal well.

Brian_wo,
What kind of rods were you using (440 or 383)? And were you using 383 pistons as well. I saw a previous post you had where you said you had to have your pistons "flycut" do you mean the typical valve notches or something that a machine shop would have to do. I am really interesed in building a stroked 383 so any advice you could give me (types of parts used) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

My pistons were bought from a guy who had them custom made and the valve reliefs were not deep enough for .621 lift so I marked them and told my machinest how much deeper they needed to be,I am also using a 383 rod but would not again,I would much rather have a 440 rod because that makes the piston smaller and lighter, what I would do if you have a few bucks right now is to buy a set of those close out manley rods for $440 and call Muscle motors about a set of Ross pistons, then just have a crank turned and your ready to go but really the 400 block would be the way to go,you get a few extra cubes for free,I am building one of those right now and I have a set of pistons to make a 400 in to 500 cubes and a set of Indy heads to go on that motor.

Mopargator, if you want some info on Mopar big block stroker motors, go to Yahoo and type in "451 stroker motors" at the search engine. You should find the article published by Todd's Publishing group.
